Sunday morning we decided to take the advice given us by various church members in St Johnsbury, VT to take the Kancamagus highway to Mt Washington. It turned out to be a very nice journey.
Although it was a cloudy day we decided to drive up to the top of Mt Washington in New Hampshire which was a drive that reminded Fran of our trip into Mt McKinley on our Alaska trip. Very narrow road with shear drop-offs mainly on her side of the road!!
After paying the toll ($34.00) and receiving some brief instructions, along with a CD full of information, we started up the mountain. We thought about taking the clog railway up but it would cost $70.00.
The start of the climb.
At about mile 4 (total of 8 miles) we ran into the clouds which pretty much obscured our view of the surrounding mountains.
Could someone please explain the logic of this sign?
At the top. Elevation 6,288 feet.
Some pictures inside the original bunkhouse.
Beries of the mountain ash.
As you can see there wasn't a lot of extra room when meeting other cars. Some drivers didn't want to get too close to the edge so there was even less space!!
At about mile 3 we were out of the clouds and able to see the valley below.
Exiting the Mt Washington roadway.
Decision time. Since the leaves hadn't reached their peak in the southern part of Maine, Massachusettes, and Pennsylvania we decided to drive north up highway 16 across to highway 201 then drive north to the town of Jackman, ME..Moose alley it is called.
On highway 16 heading out from Mt Washington towards our destination for the day, Rangley, ME.
There are times when you just are better off not following the gps instructions!!
Monday morning we started up highway 201 towards Jackman, ME. Although it was a rainy day the drive was still beautifu. We have decided that if we ever take another trip out East that this area is definitely one that we would revisit.
Looking North into Quebec Canada.
Only 13 miles to the Canadian border but no passports!
From Jackman, after eating lunch, we headed across to Rockwood, ME on highway 6/15.
From Rockwood we stayed on highway 15 to Bangor, ME where Fran got to alk the mall for an hour or so. Then it was on to Skowhegan, ME and a two night stay in another KOA cabin.
